The 21st Century COE Program "Usage-Based Linguistic Informatics"(2002-2006)

The biggest contribution we can make as a humanities-focused COE is to create the TUFS Language Modules, which are unprecedented not only in Asia but also the rest of the world, and use these modules as the foundation for constructing a multilingual e-Learning system. This system is a cutting-edge language education system that will contribute to language education in the 21st Century, which could be described as a borderless and multilingual era. The TUFS Language Modules currently include 17 languages (English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, Korean, Mongolian, Indonesian, Tagalog, Laotian, Cambodian, Vietnamese, Arabian, Turkish and Japanese) and have made it possible to realize a multilingual e-Learning environment unprecedented anywhere in the world. Moreover, the Multilingual Version Module, through which non-Japanese speakers can learn Japanese in their own respective languages, is unique to our COE.
