When language is used for communication, it carries out various functions (roles). Karl Búhler’s Organon Model and Roman Jakobson’s Communication Functions are well known in the field of linguistics. Function, as it is used here, refers to “the role played by language in the various social activities carried out by the speaker.” In this sense, function is closely related to the social linguistic background of the speaker and the settings and circumstances in which the linguistic activities occur.
