  • Kenji, how’s your stay in the Philippines so far?
  • I missed the Philippines especially the food.
  • What food have you tried?
  • Oh, I like the chicken and pork in soy sauce?
  • I forgot the name.
  • Oh, that must be ADOBO.
  • ADOBO
    "adobo"はフィリピン料理の一つで、肉と野菜を醤油や酢で味付けして炒めたもの。
  • Yah yah. I remember. A-DO-BO.
  • How do you cook that again?
  • That’s easy to cook.
  • You will need a pork, chicken, a soy sauce, pepper, a bit of vinegar, onions, garlic and laurel.
  • laurel
    "laurel"は標準英語では「月桂樹」だが、フィリピン英語では「ベイリーフ」の意味。
  • Um, what’s laurel?
  • Oh, I mean bayleaf.
  • Oh. Simple ingredients.
  • If you want it sweet, put a little sugar.
  • Okay. How do I do it?
  • Okay, it’s like this. Saute the garlic, onion and ginger.
  • You have to wait until it turns brown. Then put altogether the meat, soy sauce, pepper, bayleaf, and then the vinegar.
  • Then add a cup of water and just let it boil until the meat is, ah, tender.
  • Oh, I get it. But how do I know if it’s done?
  • It should be tender at least, um, easy to bite.
  • And if I like it sweet?
  • That’s the time, ah, you put the sugar.
  • That’s quite easy. I’ll try it tonight.
  • You should invite me the next time you cook, ha?
  • Oh, sure I will.
  • I will try that one of these days.
